Some office designs are meant to serve a practical purpose only, providing a safe, functional place to do business.
For the Washington, D.C. office of international law firm Squire Patton Boggs, the goal was to send a message. The multi-story, tour-de-force of modern design demonstrates the type of law firm that Squire Patton Boggs is at its core. Boasting more than one thousand attorneys across twenty-one countries, Squire Patton Boggs is powerful, progressive, and creative. The design makes that clear — and every detail plays a part.
The law firm partnered with Alliance Architecture to guide the project. Embodying an open concept, the office lobby features a circular hub station to direct visitors. Bright splashes of vibrant color adorn the rear wall. A vertical garden stretches to the ceiling, interjecting a natural flourish into the modernist office. A balcony overlooks the expansive lobby. A single, prominent staircase leads from the lobby to the second-floor offices.
To satisfy building codes and provide safety, that staircase and balcony both required a railing system. In theory, any number of metal railing systems could have done the job, but that wasn’t the statement Squire Patton Boggs wanted to make.
Both the architect and client planned meticulously to ensure their office made a precise stylistic statement — their railing system needed to offer the aesthetic to match.
Alliance Architecture partnered with HDI to select the Ferric railing system. One of the most angular and striking railing systems in HDI’s fleet, Ferric matched the dramatic modern style of the office.
To accompany the stainless steel railing system, they chose a glass infill, providing the strength to match steel. The un-tempered glass does not obscure the showpiece lobby and the vertical garden—instead mirroring its modern aesthetic.
Both the architect and law firm stakeholders were impressed by their Ferric railing system, which brought strength and matching style to their design.
