Worcester Union Station, a key transportation hub in Massachusetts is currently undergoing significant renovations. Built in 1911, this historic station is receiving upgrades to improve its functionality, capacity, and safety. Within the scope of this project, accessibility is a major focus, particularly with the installation of new elevators, stairways, and a pedestrian bridge. The upgrades aim to make the station fully accessible, benefiting its 1,600 daily MBTA riders and the surrounding community.

Enhancing Accessibility and Safety

Worcester Union Station renovation required a careful balance between modernizing the facility and preserving its historic character. The updated stairways and pedestrian bridge needed to enhance accessibility and safety while seamlessly integrating with the station’s architectural heritage. As part of the project, domestic materials needed to be sourced in compliance with the Buy American Act.

Selecting the Inox™ Railing System

To meet these requirements, HDI Railings supplied the Inox™ railing system on the newly constructed the new high-level center platform. This system features a distinctive open post design constructed with twin stainless steel bars and wire mesh infill. The railings were surface-mounted to concrete and steel on the stairs, with side-mounted steel on the pedestrian bridge. The dual runs of handrails, made from passivated 316 stainless steel with a 240-grain brushed finish, offer durability and sleekness.

An improved Worcester Union Station

Installing the Inox™ railing system has significantly improved Worcester Union Station’s safety and accessibility. The new stairways and pedestrian bridge railings provide a secure and comfortable route for riders moving to and from the new high-level center platform and the MBTA parking area.

The brushed stainless steel finish and open post design of the Inox™ system enhance the station’s modern design while preserving its historic charm. In early July, the new high-level center platform opened to the public. Complete renovations are expected to be completed in spring 2025.
