Morgan State University envisioned its new Health and Human Services Center (HHSC) as a facility that would elevate its academic standing and serve the Baltimore community. The project required a modern, durable, and visually appealing railing system to complement the sleek design of the six-story, 208,000-square-foot building. The challenge lay in balancing aesthetic appeal with safety and functionality, particularly in high-traffic areas.

Railing System: Optik™ Shoe & Kubit
Location: Baltimore, MD.
Architect: HOK

Fluid floating glass design

To meet the project’s design and safety goals, HDI Railings provided the Optik Shoe™ and Kubit™ railing systems. These systems are renowned for their minimalist, modern designs. The Optik Shoe™ system, equipped with a patented disc lock, was used to create a “floating glass” effect.

The Optik Shoe™ and Kubit™ railing systems seamlessly integrate into the building’s open spaces, presenting a sleek, contemporary appearance. The design team chose to have the Optik Shoe system recessed underneath all of the stair finishes to really present a floating glass design.

The Kubit™ system, featuring rectangular posts and a minimalist design, was installed on the building’s balconies and stairways. Made from high-quality stainless steel, Kubit provided structural integrity and a clean, refined look. Hidden internal connections created a sleek, sculpted aesthetic that blended effortlessly with the building’s overall design.

Linear elegance with luminous LED handrails

HDI also incorporated integrated LED handrails in all wall-attached railing sections on the stairs. These LED handrails served both as a safety feature and a design element, adding brightness to the staircases and enhancing the overall visual appeal.

Future-forward design solutions

HDI’s Optik Shoe™ and Kubit™ systems were engineered to meet the design and structural needs of the HHSC. The result was a modern and elegant railing system that perfectly complemented the forward-thinking design of Morgan State University’s new Health and Human Services Center.

The Optik Shoe™ system’s floating glass effect added openness and transparency, while the Kubit™ system offered a minimalist aesthetic with exceptional durability.

Design innovation meets community impact

The integration of HDI’s Optik Shoe™ and Kubit™ systems significantly elevated the facility’s visual appeal and functionality, aligning with Morgan State University’s mission.

These innovative designs enhanced the open, collaborative environment while ensuring the durability and safety required for high-traffic areas.

By complementing the university’s commitment to cutting-edge research and community service, this project represents a key milestone in Morgan State’s journey toward R1 research status.
